Ubuntu Mobile Edition with Apple Touch interfaceTuesday, March 25, 2008 Some news from the Canonical front. The Ubuntu Mobile Edition which is coming out soon, and it is basically designed for handhelds and MIDs( Mobile Internet Devices) of Intel Silverthorne machines coming in spring. The OS would be using 'iPhone-like swiping and touch movements' for scrolling/unlocking etc. The OS has been revamped for the touchscreen purpose and it also includes an on-screen keyboard for typing. Moreover, Canonical has promised that mobile internet devices will have full support of user launched programs and web browsing. Bluetooth, GPS, and USB webcams all would be plug and play using Ubuntu Mobile Edition. Other goodies such as 3G Internet access , Wi-Fi, and/or WiMAX would be available, and the handhelds would also be able to implement 3D based on OpenGL. Ubuntu Mobile Edition is expected to be released sometime in early May, or maybe end-April, and would be meant for mobile internet devices with 2-8GB flash memory and 5-7 inch screens.
